Capturing the Blur: High-Speed Photography at IMSA Battle on the Bricks

The roar of engines, the smell of burnt rubber, and the exhilarating speed – there's nothing quite like experiencing an IMSA race. But beyond the live spectacle, there's a whole other dimension to capture: the incredible artistry of high-speed photography. This past weekend at the "Battle on the Bricks" at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I challenged myself to freeze – or rather, beautifully blur – the heart-pounding action.

Shooting the IMSA Battle on the Bricks at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) is a completely different beast than Road America. While Road America is about elevation and forests, Indy is about history, flat-out speed, and the technical "infield" section of the world's most famous oval.

The 2026 race returns to a 2-hour and 40-minute sprint format on September 20, 2026, making the action faster and the pressure on photographers even higher. Here is your guide to capturing the "Brickyard" like a pro.
